Francis O’Gara was born in Limerick, Ireland, in about 1882. He worked for Ulster Bank.

 

In June 1916 O'Gara left his job as a teller at the bank's Limerick branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Munster Fusiliers, and later in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was wounded in 1916 and had only recently returned to the front when he was killed in action in France on 6 August 1917. He was 35 years old.

 

Francis O'Gara is commemorated on two memorials at Ulster Bank’s Belfast head office: its roll of honour for staff who served in the First World War and its memorial for those who fell.
