William Neill

William Neill was born on 11 February 1899, the son of Thomas Neill, a farmer. In January 1914, when he was 14 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Dalkeith branch.
During the First World War Neill left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 12 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
William Neill is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
