Raymond Crossland Newton was born in Sheffield in 1899. His father died while he was still an infant, and he was raised by his mother, Grace, who ran a sweet shop and later a boarding house. After leaving school he went to work for Shefield Banking Co at its Sheffield branch.

During the First World War Newton joined the army, becoming a Private in the Grenadier Guards. He died in France on 23 August 1918. He was 19 years old.
