Ernest Arthur Norris was born in England on 12 September 1888, the son of Albert Norris, a professor of music, and his wife Gertrude. In February 1909 he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh High Street branch. In October 1911 he moved to Edinburgh Bruntsfield branch, and in May 1913 he became a clerk at Edinburgh South Side branch.
During the First World War Norris left the bank to go on military service, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, on active service in France. He died on the Somme on 22 March 1918. He was 29 years old.
Ernest Norris is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
