William Hugh Morgan was born on 15 June 1884, the son of William Morgan, a chemist, and his wife Rebecca. In April 1901, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Rugby branch. In February 1903 he transferred to Birmingham Horsefair branch, where he finished his three-year apprenticeship.

In October 1909 Morgan moved to Whitchurch branch; in June 1914 to Dorchester branch; and in March 1915 to Southsea branch. The following February, he was promoted to become cashier of Southsea branch. His staff report for 1916 noted that he was 'fond of country life', and suggested he would be well-suited to working in a branch in an agricultural district.

In 1916 Morgan left his job at the bank to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers. He died on the Western Front on 11 April 1918. He was 33 years old.
