William Joseph McGrath was born on 7 April 1898, the son of Michael McGrath and his wife Eliza. In April 1915, on his 17th birthday, McGrath went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In June 1916 McGrath left his post as a clerk at the bank's Foreign branch in London to join the army, becoming a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He was invalided out of the army in October 1917, after being treated in a military hospital. He died in England on 27 November 1917 while awaiting sanatorium treatment. He was 19 years old.
William McGrath is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
