William Wilde Martin was born on 26 September 1888, the son of William and Betsy Ann Martin. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Hull Union Bank branch.

During the First World War Martin left the bank to join the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He died in France on 9 April 1917. He was 28 years old.

William Martin is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
