Thomas Stanley Middleton was born on 5 February 1891, the son of William and Henrietta Middleton. In February 1908 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Ambleside branch. He transferred to Windermere branch later that year, and to Blackpool branch in 1909. He was promoted to clerk in 1912, and transferred to Blackpool South Shore branch in 1914.
In April 1915 Middleton left the bank to join the army. Two years later he was commissioned into the Border Regiment. Second Lieutenant Middleton was killed in action on the Western Front on 19 May 1917. He was 26 years old.
