Sidney Herbert Morgan was born in Salisbury on 12 February 1887, the son of Rees John Morgan, a bank manager, and his wife Eliza. He was educated as a boarder at Sir William Borlase School, Marlow.

In March 1903, when Morgan was 16 years old, he went to work for his father's bank, National Provincial Bank of England, as apprentice at its Exeter branch. After completing his apprenticeship he was promoted to a clerkship there. In September 1909 he moved to Exmouth branch; in December 1911 to Bideford branch; and in December 1912 to Southsea branch.

In August 1915 Morgan joined the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment the following May, and went to France in the same month. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 4 April 1917. He was 30 years old.
