Michael Molloy

Bank: National Provincial Bank of England

Place of work: Birmingham branch

Died: 9 August 1915

Michael Vallancey Molloy was born in Keyston, Huntingdonshire, on 29 September 1894, the son of the Reverend Eben Molloy, a clergyman in the Church of England, and his wife Harriott. He was educated at Seabrook Lodge, Kent, and Rossall School.

In December 1912, when Molloy was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Tamworth branch. The following April he transferred to Birmingham branch.

At school he had been a member of the Officers Training Corps, and in Birmingham he joined the University OTC. He was gazetted Second Lieutenant in August 1914, and went to France in January 1915. He was killed in action at Hooge on 9 August 1915. He was 20 years old. A fellow officer wrote to his parents, 'Mollie (as we all called him) was to me as dear as a younger brother. No loss has affected me so much in this war, and it has caused a gap that cannot be filled. You must, indeed, be proud to have such a son; brave, extraordinarily courteous, and always anxious to help and be a pleasure to others.'
