John Alexander Milne was born in Glasgow on 25 March 1894, the son of Francis Milne, a wholesale fish and game merchant, and his wife Isabella. He was educated at Bellahouston Academy.

In June 1910, when he was 16 years old, Milne went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland. In July 1914, he left that bank to take a job in the Manchester Corn Exchange branch of National Provincial Bank of England.

During the First World War Milne left his job at National Provincial Bank of England to join the army. By 1918 he was a Quartermaster Serjeant in the Royal Engineers, on active service in Syria. He died of malaria there on 20 October 1918. He was 24 years old.
