John McGill

John McGill was born in Ballantrae, Ayrshire, in 1892. In March 1909 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Ballantrae branch.

 

During the First World War McGill left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 28 July 1918.

 

John McGill is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
