James David Cormack McAdie was born in Edinburgh in 1897, the first son of William McAdie, a mason, and his wife Mary Ann. In July 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland. He worked for a time at Edinburgh West End branch, before moving to Edinburgh Home Street branch.
During the First World War McAdie left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Corporal in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 12 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
James McAdie is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
