Hector William Munro was born in Linlithgow in 1895, the son of Thomas Clark Munro, an employee of Commercial Bank of Scotland, and his wife Mary Craig Munro. In September 1910 Munro followed in his father's footsteps by going to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland, becoming an apprentice at its Stirling branch. His father, who had joined the bank in 1876, was appointed agent at the same branch in March 1915.

During the First World War Munro left the bank to go on military service, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 23 April 1917. He was 21 years old.

Hector Munro is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
