George McMillan

George McMillan was born on 17 December 1885 in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, the son of John McMillan, a mercantile clerk, and his wife Mary Ellen. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, and later went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co at its Manchester head office.

 

In September 1914 McMillan left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. In 1917 he was commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment. By that date two of his three younger brothers had already been killed; one at Gallipoli and the other on the Somme.

 

Second Lieutenant McMillan was killed in action at Passchendaele on 31 July 1917. He was 31 years old.
