Ernest Howard Moulden was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1891, the son of Thomas Alfred Moulden, a commercial traveller, and his wife Emily Kate. He worked for Williams Deacon's Bank.

 

During the First World War Moulden left his job as a clerk at the bank's Preston branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 September 1916. He was 25 years old.
