Edward Mead was born in Beverley on 23 August 1890, the son of Walter and Amy Mead. In August 1907 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Rochdale branch. He was promoted to a clerkship there in 1912, and in the following year transferred to the bank's head office in Manchester.
In October 1915 Mead left the bank to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers, on active service in France. He died there on 22 April 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 27 years old.
