Donald Lawton Mayer was born in Hindley, Lancashire on 29 March 1894, the son of the Reverend Walter F Mayer, a Wesleyan minister, and his wife Emily Gertrude. He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath.
In September 1911, when he was 17 years old, Mayer went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Liverpool branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and was promoted to a clerkship there.
During the First World War Mayer joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He died in France on 6 April 1918, not long after his 24th birthday.
