Alexander MacTaggart was born in Appin, Argyllshire, in 1890, the son of Coll and Ann MacTaggart. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its Forfar branch.
During the First World War MacTaggart left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died in Palestine on 2 November 1917. He was 26 years old.
Alexander MacTaggart is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
