Alexander MacNiven was born in Cambeltown in 1898, the son of Alexander and Mary McNiven. In November 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Campbeltown branch.
During the First World War MacNiven left the bank to join the army. By 1918 he was a Serjeant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in France on 22 March 1918. He was 20 years old.
Alexander MacNiven is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
