Alaster MacArthur was born on 20 September 1870. In September 1885, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Inveraray branch. He became joint agent there in February 1898 and sole agent in September 1902.

 

During the First World War MacArthur left the bank to go on military service, and by 1916 he was a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, on active service in France. He was killed in action in France on 13 November 1916. He was 46 years old.

 

Alaster MacArthur is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh, where his forename is spelt Alastair.
