William Anthony Langsdale was born on 6 April 1897, the son of Dennis William Langsdale and his wife Eliza Jane. In July 1913 he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co.

During the First World War Langsdale left his job at the bank's Coalville branch to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), on active service in France. He died there on 22 March 1918. He was 20 years old.
