Sydney Paul Lewin was born in Rutlandshire in 1885. In March 1909 he went to work as a messenger for London & County Bank. In August 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Lewin became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. Outside work he was a keen amateur cricketer.
In June 1916 Lewin left his job at the bank's London Fore Street branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was wounded in action in April 1917 and brought back to England to undergo surgery on his shattered thigh. While in hospital in Southampton he contracted scarlet fever, and died on 5 August 1917. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Ethel Mary, whom he had married in 1908.
