Robert Levitt was born on 8 September 1893, the son of a Leeds cabinet maker. In February 1910, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Durham branch. In June 1914 he transferred to Gateshead branch as a clerk.

During the First World War Levitt left the bank to go on military service, and by 1917 he was a Captain in The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, on active service in Mesopotamia. He died there on 7 July 1917. He was 23 years old and left a fiancée, Nellie Bostock.
