Percy Valentine Lewin was born in Suffolk on 10 February 1897, the son of Arthur Lewin, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. His father died while he was still a child, and his mother became a boarding house keeper. He was educated at the Royal British Orphanage, Slough.

 

In December 1914, when Lewin was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London St Martin's Le Grand branch. He later transferred to London Aldersgate Street branch.

 

During the First World War Lewin joined the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in France on 16 August 1917. He was 20 years old.
