Marshall Lee was born in Dollar, Clackmannanshire on 2 December 1874, the son of John and Alice Lee. In February 1892 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its West Calder Branch. In January 1894 he transferred to head office in Edinburgh. He moved again to southern district office in December 1895, and returned to head office in October 1897.
During the First World War Lee left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died of heatstroke in the Middle East on 27 April 1917. He was 42 years old.
Marshall Lee is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
