Llewelyn Lewis was born on 16 October 1891, the son of Thomas Hugh Lewis, a merchant, and his wife Margaret. He was educated at Ysgol y Poplars, Bangor, and King’s School, Chester. In September 1908, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Colwyn Bay branch. In May 1913 he transferred to Manchester branch as a clerk.

During the First World War Lewis left the bank to go on military service. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, on active service in France. He died on the Somme between 1 and 12 July 1916. He was 25 years old.
