John Cockburn Loraine was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 22 November 1899, the son of Robert and Mary Loraine. In November 1915 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow West George Street branch.
In 1917 Loraine left the bank to join the navy, becoming a Private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, serving on board HMS St Vincent. He died of disease on 11 December 1918. He was 19 years old.
John Loraine is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
