George Lindsay was born in Leith in 1892, the fourth son of James Lindsay, a shoemaker, and his wife Elizabeth. In May 1908 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Leith branch. In February 1912 he moved to the head office inspector's department.
During the First World War Lindsay left the bank to go on military service, and by 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 7 May 1917. He was 24 years old.
George Lindsay is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
