George Frederick Law was born on 4 February 1896, the son of a lawyer. He was educated at Westoe Secondary School, South Shields. In January 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Durham branch. Just a few days later, having encountered difficulties commuting by train from South Shields, he transferred to Sunderland branch.
During the First World War Law joined the army, serving as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in France by a sniper on 19 October 1916. He was 20 years old.
