Geoffrey William Lake was born on 28 April 1900, the son of George William Lake, a clerk in London South Kensington branch of National Provincial Bank of England. He lived in London until he was 4, when his father was appointed to the bank's Exeter branch. In 1909 the family moved to Taunton, where George had been appointed manager of the bank's new branch. Geoffrey was educated at Taunton School.

 

In September 1916 Lake followed in his father's footsteps, going to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Bridgwater branch. He subsequently joined the army, initially as a Cadet and then as a Private in the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps. He fell ill and died of pneumonia in hospital in England on 10 November 1918, the day before the signing of the Armistice. He was 18 years old.
