Francis Lanaway

Francis Charlton Lanaway was born on 15 May 1882, the son of Hugh Lanaway. He was educated at King's College School, London. In January 1901, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Lanaway became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1917 Lanaway left his job as a clerk at the bank's Cambridge branch go on military service, and by the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action on 21 August 1918. He was 36 years old and left a widow, Frances Grace, whom he had married in April 1914.

 

Francis Lanaway is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Cambridge Market Street branch.
