Ernest Henry Austin Lucas was born in London, on 10 December 1890, the son of William Austin Lucas and his wife Louisa. In June 1910, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.

 

In June 1915 Lucas left his job as a clerk at the bank's Foreign branch, London to join the army, initially in the London Regiment. He was later commissioned into the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was wounded at the Somme in 1916, but was later able to return to active service. Second Lieutenant Lucas was killed in action at Messine on 7 June 1917. He was 26 years old.

 

Ernest Lucas is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
