Edwin Gerald Raoul Lemprière was born in Hastings on 10 October 1896, the son of Edwin Charles Lemprière and his wife Annie Frances. In March 1914, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In April 1916 Lemprière left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to go on military service, initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), and later in the London Regiment. Private Lemprière died in France on 5 October 1916, five days before his 20th birthday.
