Arthur Henry Laird was born in Poplar, London, on 13 April 1878. In February 1896, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Laird became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
Outside work Laird was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve. He was mobilised at the outbreak of war in 1914, leaving his job as a clerk at the bank's London Blackheath branch to go on active service. By 1916 he was an Assistant Paymaster in the Royal Naval Air Service. He was accidentally killed on 28 March 1916 when he was hit by a falling tree during a storm in Roehampton, England. He was 37 years old and left a widow, Nellie, whom he had married in 1913.
