Alexander Landsborough was born in Castle Douglas on 20 June 1895, the son of John Landsborough, a postman, and his wife Williamina. He was educated at Castle Douglas Elementary and Higher Grade School. In December 1911, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Union Bank of Scotland. In February 1915 he moved to National Provincial Bank of England, becoming a clerk at its Newcastle upon Tyne branch.
During the First World War Landsborough left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in France on 23 April 1917. He was 21 years old.
