Sydney Knowles was born in 1897, the son of James and Mary Knowles. In May 1913 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank at its Rotherham branch.

In July 1916 Knowles left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Durham Light Infantry. He died of pneumonia in hospital in France on 19 December 1916. He was 19 years old.

Sydney Knowles is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
