Oliver Charles King was born in January 1882. In June 1899, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and King became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In the first week of September 1914 King left his job as a clerk at the bank's Sudbury branch to join the army. By the following year he was a Lance Corporal in the Northamptonshire Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action on 25 September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Mary, whom he had married in 1913.
