John Elgar Keene was born in 1892. He was educated at Mr Durham's School, Derby, and at Derby Technical College. In July 1908 he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank at its Wirksworth branch. He subsequently moved to Heanor branch. In 1914 Crompton & Evans' Union Bank was acquired by Parr's Bank, and in May of that year Keene transferred to the bank's Chesterfield branch.
In September 1914 Keene left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 1 February 1915. He was 23 years old.
John Keene is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chesterfield branch.
