David Rae Kinnear was born on 1 May 1886, the son of William Kinnear. In October 1903, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Dundee branch. He became a clerk there in 1910, and in April 1911 moved to the bank's London office.

 

During the First World War Kinnear joined the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 29 November 1917. He was 31 years old.
