David Leslie Kiddle was born on 4 October 1900, the son of Alfred Kiddle, a tailor, and his wife Susan. In February 1917, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Gloucester branch.
Kiddle later joined the Royal Air Force, serving as an Air Mechanic, Second Class. He died in France on 18 September 1919, a few weeks before his 19th birthday.
