William Gilbert James was born on 1 June 1893, the son of William and Teresa Maria James. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Bayswater branch.

Early in the First World War James left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Lance Corporal in the London Regiment. He died in France on 14 June 1917. He was 24 years old.

William James is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
