Stephen Henry Jones was born on 24 January 1898, the son of Henry Stephen Jones, a grocer, and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Ruabon Grammar School. In November 1915, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Shrewsbury branch.
In October 1916 Jones left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Monmouthshire Regiment and later the South Wales Borderers. He died on the Western Front on 11 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
