John Harold Jones was born in Aberayron on 23 June 1889, the son of Benjamin Cledan Jones and his wife Mary. In January 1906, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Carmarthen branch. In August 1908 ill health forced him to resign, but his health improved and in July - following a medical examination - he was allowed to rejoin the bank. He transferred to Portmadoc branch in August 1909, and then to Brecon branch as a clerk in April 1913.

In May 1916 Jones joined the army, serving initially as a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was killed in France on 1 October 1917. He was 28 years old.
