Herbert Owen Jones was born on 29 December 1897, the son of Thomas Herbert Jones, a bank worker. He was educated at Hulme Grammar School, Manchester, and City of London School. In November 1914, when he was 16 years old, Jones went to work for his father's bank, National Provincial Bank of England. Thomas was manager of the bank's Brixton branch, but Herbert started his apprenticeship at London Strand branch.
In May 1916 Jones joined the army, becoming a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 9 October 1917. He was 19 years old.
