Gordon Black Johnston was born on 6 August 1883. In January 1902, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Johnston became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

In May 1915 Johnston left his job as a clerk at the bank's Horsham branch to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He died of influenza on 22 October 1918. He was 35 years old.
