George William Johnson was born in about 1898, the son of George Johnson. From about 1914 he worked for Parr's Bank.

During the First World War Johnson left his job at the bank's Sandiacre branch to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on the Somme on 24 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
