Frederick Sidney Joyce was born in Richmond, Surrey, on 12 October 1889, the son of Charles Joyce, a waiter, and his wife Mary Jane. He worked for Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co at its Town Office.

 

In November 1915 Joyce left the bank to go on military service, initially as a Machine Gunner in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Due to poor eyesight he was later transferred to a battalion of the Durham Light Infantry assigned to home service, where he served as a Serjeant.

 

On 7 July 1918 Joyce married Florence Frances Swan. He died less than a fortnight later, on 18 July 1918, while on home service in England. He was 28 years old.
