Frederick Joseland
Bank: National Provincial Bank of England
Place of work: Gloucester branch
Died: 10 September 1916
Frederick Osborn Joseland was born on 7 February 1892, the son of a builder. Through his mother's family, he was related to a head office employee of National Provincial Bank of England, and it was possibly through this link that Joseland himself obtained a position with the bank. He started work as an apprentice at its Cheltenham Montpellier branch in August 1908, when he was 16 years old. Upon completion of his apprenticeship he was promoted to a clerkship there, and in August 1912 he transferred to Shrewsbury branch.
He passed the final examination of the Institute of Bankers in 1914, and in June that year transferred to Gloucester branch. His manager there said of him 'works quietly and steadily; reliable and fairly accurate.'
In July 1915 Joseland joined the army, and in January 1916 he was commissioned into the London Regiment. Second Lieutenant Frederick Osborn Joseland was killed in action in France on 10 September 1916. He was 24 years old.
