Francis Hugh Johnson was born in London on 13 September 1894. On his 17th birthday in 1911 Johnson went to work for London County & Westminster Bank, originally as a junior clerk at its London Streatham branch, and later as a clerk at Greenwich branch.
In July 1915 Johnson joined the army, and by 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action on 15 September 1916, two days after his 22nd birthday, while leading his platoon in an attack on the German front line.
